Character: Death
Series: Discworld novels
Version: Before Mort (the novel in which he takes on an apprentice)
Age: Eternal
Gender: None really, assumed male
Sexuality: …if he’s got no gender, what makes you think he’s got a sexuality?
Appearance: He looks for all the world like the stereotypical Grim Reaper. He stands over seven feet tall, dressed in a hooded black robe. He is assumed to be entirely skeletal, but nobody has ever checked under the robe (for good reason), and Death certainly isn’t telling. The only parts of him ever visible are the front of his head and his hands: both are entirely skeletal. Blue fire burns in his eye sockets, oftentimes showing more intelligence than the eyes of most people.
Personality: Believe it or not, Death is a “people person.” He doesn’t kill people at all – he simply eases the transition once they die of some cause outside his control (oftentimes an unfortunate incident with livestock or the Assassin’s Guild, depending on the status of the victim). He tries to be as friendly as possible in order to “ease the transition,” though it doesn’t always work. Being around humans so much, he has begun to take up human traits and interests – however bad a hand he is at music and art, he still tries. He has also started to develop a sense of humor, though it tends to be dry, pun-centric, and fly right over the heads of the simpler citizens of Discworld. He really is a friendly being once you get to know him (although, since dying is the first step in this, people tend to be rather hesitant to try).
Death does have his more serious side – being a semi-omnipotent being, whenever something falls cosmically amiss in Discworld, he oftentimes finds himself doing whatever he can to fix it. He speaks in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, a voice that conveys authority and expects a certain level of respect in return.
Abilities/Weaponry: Death’s abilities are many and varied. Because of his job, he knows people’s names – their real names – the instant he sees them (and most likely before that, though that particular idea is never developed). He can also walk through walls. When he puts power into his voice, he can coerce people to do quite literally anything – a voice that “is more like actions than words.” And, as per his job, he helps the souls of the dead cross over into whatever lies beyond the threshold of life.
Death’s weapon is, unsurprisingly, a scythe. This scythe, however, was designed with a purpose far beyond reaping wheat in mind. The blade of the scythe can only be seen full-on: from the side, top, or bottom, nothing of the blade can be seen except a blue line that seems to fool the eyes. The blade of the scythe, too thin to be seen from most angles, has the power to cut the very air in two and remove souls from bodies.
Weaknesses: Death is shy. He tends only to be seen by the recently dead, and can only be seen by normal (i.e. living) people when they expect to see him. Considering this normal invisibility, when he is easily visible to multitudes of people, he experiences something akin to stage fright.
His appearance also tends to be rather intimidating, putting a damper on whatever social life he might attempt to develop. Because of this utter lack of social life, he has very little in the area of social skills. Subtle social awkwardness and inappropriateness tend to fly right by him. (He does, however, catch the bigger instances.) He’ll often ask for verification, or only realize that a social situation is less than desirable after the fact (THAT IS SOMETHING I SHOULD NOT HAVE SAID, ISN’T IT.).
The only limitations on his aforementioned powers lie in his morality. He tends not to use his powers or weaponry unless it is an absolute last resort.
History: As long as there has been life, there has been death, and with death came Death. For eons, he was simply what people expected him to be: a being to help ferry souls across to what lay beyond. Only recently (in the past century or so) has Death begun to take a deeper interest in the lives of humans. He has attempted to humanize himself (developing a sense of humor, for example), but finds it more difficult than anticipated. He just can’t seem to get it right.
Since Arriving in Paixao: Death has been quite busy since he first entered the gates of the domed city. He'd barely been in the city long enough to meet the wordless swordsman Jintetsu before he caught sight of Jack Skellington. Interested in the presence of another like him, he ended up following Jack's group back out of the gates of the city and going with them to explore the island in the hopes of reaching the chapel on a far shore. Unfortunately, this trip was cut short, as the travelers were attacked first by a group of Dancer nobodies, then by several members of the Organization. Several members of the party were kidnapped by the Organization and brought back for experiments, and the rest were dropped back inside the city. Death, embarrassingly, ended up inside a whorehouse.
After beating a rather hasty retreat, he met over a dozen new people, all in the interests of gathering information on the Organization. He came to speak with Sephiroth and helped him organize a meeting of people who were against the Organization's rule over the city. Seeing someone he'd come to care about disappear and watching a young girl be tortured only strengthened his resolve to see the Organization overthrown.
